Who We Are

The British Columbia Farm Writers’ Association (BCFWA) is a passionate non-profit organization representing agricultural journalists, communicators, and media professionals across BC. With close ties to other writers and publications provincially and nationally, in addition to industry and governmental affiliations, the BCFWA is a strong network of the people telling the stories of agriculture in B.C.

We are part of the Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation (CFWF) and the International Forum of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ), giving members access to national and global professional development and networking opportunities.

Connecting BC's Agricultural Storytellers

Agriculture in BC is supported by a myriad of communication touch points: conversations over coffee before sunrise, phone calls punctuated by the sounds of livestock, late-night Zoom meetings to put the final touches on a story before a deadline, or an email that cuts right to the heart of what a BC farmer is up against. The British Columbia Farm Writers’ Association knows that good communication does not happen by accident. We bring together writers from across the province who have experience, integrity and curiosity and who want to challenge, support and learn from each other.

With a shared commitment to helping the public understand agriculture in a way that is accurate, ethical and grounded in reality, our membership includes journalists, photographers, broadcasters, podcasters, researchers, public servants, students and others who share these values. Our work has never been more important. In a world that is more divided than ever, and in an industry facing unprecedented challenges, British Columbians rely on us to get it right.

BCFWA is a community made up of professionals you can count on to provide context, perspective, background, advice or whatever you need to help you make sense of an issue. It is a place where new communicators can receive mentorship, where ideas can grow and where our members can connect with others who understand how challenging it can be to tell the stories of agriculture in a rapidly changing world.

As part of the Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation (CFWF) and the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ), we help ensure that the voices of BC agriculture are heard in national and international conversations. These networks create opportunities to travel, learn and collaborate with agricultural communicators around the world who understand the pressures and rewards of working in this field.

If your work involves agricultural communication, or if you would like it to, we welcome you. This is a community of lifelong learners who support each other to get the story right.
